Diet affects Healthspan

There is a giant study of women (47K of them) which has given a lot of useful data. This study was looking at diet and healthspan- Does your dietary carbohydrate intake and fiber intake affect chronic disease, physical and cognitive function, and mental health?

For those of you with no attention span, the answer is yes.

Study

This was an original investigation published in May 2025 in JAMA. “Dietary Carbohydrate Intake, Carbohydrate Quality, and Healthy Aging in Women.” They start by talking about how carbohydrate quality is inversely associated with risks of chronic disease and all cause mortality, but there was limited evidence. So they used the prospective cohort study of women aged less than 60, collected from 1984-2016 of 47K women. Baseline age was 48.

Study:

  • Total intake of carbohydrates, refined carbohydrates, and high quality carbohydrates – whole grains, fruit, vegetables, beans
  • Fiber
  • Dietary glycemic index and glycemic load
  • Healthy aging was defined as lack of major chronic disease, no impairment in cognition of physical function, and good mental health.

Findings?

  • Only 7.8% had healthy aging
  • Every 10% calorie increment in total carbohydrates and high quality carbohydrates was positively associated with healthy aging.
  • Refined carbohydrates had lower odds of healthy aging.
  • Intake of total dietary fiber (fruit, vegetables, cereals) had higher odds of healthy aging.
