PRF injections for hair restoration is superior to PRP
Do not misunderstand us. PRP is also good for hair restoration. PRP (platelet rich plasma) has been well documented to help with hair regrowth. PRP and PRF have similarities: They are both autologous (come from your own blood) and have high concentrations of platelets, which release growth factors. We are taking advantage of the regenerative effects of these growth factors for hair growth. Both are safe and minimally invasive. But there are new studies which show PRF is likely superior for hair restoration.
PRF Study showing Hair Improvements
Study: “New Tool in Our Arsenal: Efficacy of Injectable PRF in Androgenetic Alopecia Treatment”, published in 2025.
PRF leads to significant improvements in hair density and scalp symptoms in this population, with an 80% response rate observed in those with prior inadequate responses to standard therapies.
- Prospective, single-center study enrolled 30 AGA patients with inadequate responses to conventional treatments.
- Participants received six monthly PRF injections.
- They were evaluated looking at hair density, vellus hairs, shaft diameter, treatment efficacy, physician’s visual subjective score, scalp inflammation -folliculitis, greasiness, dandruff, and itching, and patient satisfaction scoring
- Findings? At 6 months a 80% response rate was achieved, with significant improvements in per hair scoring, physician’s visual score, scalp inflammation, and patient satisfaction.
Other studies have shown both male and female patients with Androgenetic Alopecia (hair loss, also called AGA) have shown positive responses to PRF. Generally greater improvements are seen in those with higher severity at baseline. Current evidence is limited by small sample sizes and lack of standardized protocols, though most protocols do a series of 3-6 injections spaced 1 month apart. Note: there is insufficient data to support PRF efficacy in non-AGA populations, such as those with alopecia areata or scarring alopecia.
Why is PRF better than PRP? How is it different?
PRF is thought to offer a more sustained release of growth factors. It also as more fibrin, and it is thought the 3D fibrin scaffold, promotes hair induction and dermal papilla cell proliferation and migration. PRF is thought to have higher leukocyte content, which may help it with immune modulation and regenerative properties.
PRF is also processed differently. PRF is a single centrifuge product, which is prepared without activators or anticoagulants. to create a fibrin matrix.
Biohackr Health Hair Restoration PRF Injections
We do injections of PRF in our Bay Area clinics in San Francisco Union Street and downtown Palo Alto. It works. Why do we love it?
- It is not a daily thing. Many people do not want to take a daily pill, supplement, or apply a topical ointment.
- It is good for those in whom other treatments have not worked. We see many people frustrated by throwing so much money at massagers, pills, red light therapy, and special shampoos with little to show for it.
- We like the science behind it. It needs to be studied in depth to show optimal regimen, amounts, etc, but it is clear the science is real.
We offer it as a series of 3 to start, spaced about 1 month apart. Many people will follow this up with a treatment once or twice a year for maintenance. HAIR OPTIONS AT BIOHACKR HEALTH
