Medical Grade Microneedling helps hair loss.
Medical grade microneedling involves using medical grade sterile one time use needles. These microneedles create a controlled microinjury to the scalp, which stimulates your wound healing cascade. It is thought it helps with hair growth because this stimulus is in the dermis at the hair follicle base, which causes the release of growth factors, stems cells, and improves vascularity to the area. This also opens microchannels which can be used to additionally help using bioactive ingredients like minoxidil, PRP (platelet rich plasma) or PRF (platelet rich fibrin), and exosomes (we at Biohackr Health use Age Zero Exosomes, which are animal based exosomes from Wharton’s Jelly). We offer all of these options at Biohackr Health in our San Francisco and Palo Alto clinics. Microneedling helps with hair density, thickness, and quality of hair. Some studies even show reversal of color changes.
Meta Analysis of Microneedling studies shows microneedling benefits for hair loss
This was a study published in 2022, Microneedling and Its Use in Hair Loss Disorders: A Systematic Review. We like studies like this which collate a lot of information. Small scientific studies can have a bias due to small sample size. When you put together a lot of studies that gets bigger numbers, and it lets you see the science.
Study:
- Studies up to November 2021 looking at microneedling for hair loss disorders
- Keywords: microneedling, micro needling, micro needle, microneedle, needle, dermaroller, alopecia, hair loss, alopecia areata, cicatricial, effluvium
- 22 studies, 1127 subjects met criteria
Findings?
- Microneedling improved hair across genders, hair loss types, severity, needling devices, and needling depths
- Needling depth ranged from 0.5-2.50mm
- Session frequencies were from once weekly to monthly
- 17 studies with 911 patients who have androgenic alopecia, microneedling was paired with 5% minoxidil, growth factor solutions, or PRP. This showed improvement in hair parameters, including when patients had hair plateaus for 6 months on other treatments
- 4 studies of 201 alopecia areata subjects, microneedling improved hair parameters as a stand a long therapy.
- No serious adverse reports from microneedling

We believe in science. There are numerous studies which show microneedling, particularly when paired with platelet rich plasma, minoxidil, or exosomes, is an effective tool to combat hair loss. As with all things, we believe a balanced combined approach is best for long lasting changes.
This is evolving science. As the data becomes clearer on ideal timing, depth of needle gauge, bioactive ingredients to use while microneedling, we will adjust our protocols.
