Woke up today to hearing that Orlando Bloom just spent 13K to have his blood filtered. The news is all over it- “Hollywood’s latest detox trend: luxury apheresis treatment,” “Orlando Bloom undergoes treatment to remove microplastics and toxic chemicals,” “Orland Blooms 10,000 pound treatment to remove microplastics from blood.”
So what is the deal?
Blood filtration is something we do at Biohackr Health. We do not do plasmapheresis. We do EBOO, also known as EBO2. This is not dialysis in the traditional sense, and I have not seen any proof that is filters microplastics out of the blood. But there is some evidence it may help with filtering out toxins, inflammatory proteins, metals, excess fats and cholesterol, and old cells. Also there are known benefits of ozonation. First let’s define some of the terms:
- Apheresis. Fancy term for when you withdraw blood, filter something out, and return blood to the body.
- Plasmapheresis. This is when you withdraw the blood, filter out a specific blood component- here it is plasma- and return the blood to the body. (In “therapeutic plasmapheresis” this plasma is thrown away- as it is thought to contain inflammatory cells, toxins, etc, and usually replaced with albumin. Plasma does also contain beneficial things in it like HDL and creatine.)
- Double filtration plasmapheresis, does a double filter, and returns the cleaned plasma back to the body. The filters usually remove particles larger than 10nm. Treatment takes 2 hours. It is thought to help with chronic issues, autoimmune, inflammation, and environmental toxins.
- Hemodialysis. This is when you use a machine- called a dialyzer- to filter the blood outside of the body.
- Dialysis. Is a broad term for any process that cleanses the blood. You hear of this most often used in diabetics who need an external device to help them filter their blood, as their kidneys, which are the organs in your body which filter the blood, are failing and cannot do their job.
- EBOO, also known as EBO2. This process treats about 5 liters of blood. It removes blood, sends it through a filter, ozone treatment (where it is treated with oxygen and ozone), ultraviolet blood irradiation, and then returned to the body. It is thought the oxidative stress stimulates the body’s natural antioxidant mechanisms. The blood returns more oxygenated, with increased red blood cell oxygen concentration, and the ozone dissolves in the blood to stimulate healing and an enhanced immune response.
So what do we think at Biohackr Health?
We are not proposing EBO2 to filter microplastics. (What size are the particles? How much is in the blood circulating? How often would you do it?) And we do not know exactly which treatment Mr. Bloom had.
We are fans of EBO2 though. The downsides are minimal, and there are studies which indicate ozonation of the blood can be beneficial. There are studies which show accelerated wound healing, improved mitochondrial function, less post operative complications, possible help in fighting breast cancer, lowering of chemotherapy side effects and more. THIS IS NOT WELL STUDIED YET. This is where biohacking is pushing the limits of published science. But there is science. See links below.
There seem to be studies which indicate that UV blood irradiation can kill viruses. There are thoughts as our treatments become less effective or we don’t have a treatment for some viruses, and bacteria become drug resistant, this may be another avenue of treatment. Again, this is not well studied.
