What do GLPs not do?
We at Biohackr Health in San Francisco and Palo Alto are big fans of GLPs. We have seen it help with weight, diabetes, heart disease, and studies showing GLPs improving everything from dementia to fatty liver to knee arthritis. This is a new published article that looked at osteoporosis and gout rates in people with Type 2 diabetes and obesity taking semaglutide compared to usual glucose lowering medications. This just drives home how losing weight, improving insulin resistance and glucose control, and avoiding inflammation are key health issues.
This was published in Endocrine as a poster presentation at their 2025 meeting. “Comparative analysis of GLP-1 receptor agonists, traditional glucose lowering medications and traditional anti obesity medications on skeletal outcomes in obese individuals with and without Type 2 diabetes: a 5 year propensity score matched cohort study.” We get the title is a bit overwhelming, but the study was a good one. They looked at a 5 year cohort study.
Study:
- Two groups: obese patients with Type 2 diabetes who got semaglutide VS others who got “traditional glucose lowering meds”(sitagliptin, empagliflozin, and glipizide
- Obese individuals on semaglutide vs. traditional anti-obesity meds (phentermine, contrave, qsymia)
- Primary outcomes measured: Osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, gout, and bone density issues
What did they find?
- In obese patients with Type 2 diabetes, those on semaglutide had a protective effect against osteoporosis and gout. This was particularly robust for those with gout.
- Unlike a prior study, they did NOT find differences in osteoarthritis in the hip and knee
