When entering middle age, menopause, doing hormone treatments, have weight issues and more, you need to test your thyroid. In our Biohackr Health clinic, we feel it is so important we include the Thyroglobulin Antibody test in our basic Biohackr Baseline screening test. Thyroid levels are not adequate to know. We find a surprising number of people who have issues with thyroid have antibodies and had no idea.

What are Thyroglobulin Antibodies?

  • This is a test to see if your body has made antibodies (an autoimmune reaction) to your own thyroid. Your body’s immune system is attacking your thyroid cells which can lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
  • These antibodies are often found in autoimmune thyroid diseases you may have heard of- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.
  • Why do they form? Autoimmune issues have been increasing for unknown reasons. It is thought to be due to inflammation, chronic illness, genetics, and environment or food triggers. One commonly discussed issue is gluten sensitivity. Gluten has a protein structure similar to proteins in your thyroid, so if someone is making antibodies against gluten, they may also attack the thyroid.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. The immune system attacks the thyroid, causing inflammation and impairing its ability to produce hormones. Symptoms: fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, dry skin and hair, hair loss, constipation, depression, memory issues, heavy or irregular periods, muscle weakness, slow heart rate.

Graves’ Disease: Leads to hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid produces too much hormone. Thyroglobulin antibodies can stimulate the thyroid to overproduce hormones. Symptoms of too much thyroid are generally the opposite of hypothyroid: faster heart rate, weight loss, increased appetite, nervousness, anxiety, tremors, sweating, changes in menstruation, fatigue, muscle weakness, frequent bowel movements, hair thinning, and an enlarged thyroid gland.

Thyroid Cancer: In some cases, the presence of thyroglobulin antibodies might be associated with thyroid cancer, although this is less common.
